In the practice of alchemy, matter is transformed from one substance to another, calcination is the first stage. Calcination is a ritual process which refers to breaking with our attachment to the physical and our need to solidify our identity. This piece was executed on the ancestral lands of the Mayan people (Las Coloradas, Mexico) and poses questions of identity in relation to place and the release of identity through natural processes (fire). The body is burned and identity is dissolved and shed.
